Sad news from our family
We announced a while ago that we were expecting another baby on May 22nd. Unfortunately, the pregnancy took a wrong turn on Sunday night. My water broke at 17 weeks, 3 days. The baby's heartbeat is strong and he/she is moving around. Baby is getting everything it needs through the placenta and is not in pain or distress. It is probably just wondering where it's bubble went. The problem is, the membrane protects baby from infection, and now there is no protection. Also, later in the pregnancy, baby needs to "breathe" the fluid in and out for lung development. About 10% of babies in this situation make it. The majority of babies are miscarried in the first week after the water breaks. Some babies hang in there longer but are lost to infection or the lungs don't develop. Terminating the pregnancy is not something we would consider unless my life was on the line. So, for now I am on complete bedrest and we take one day at a time. If I make it to 21 weeks, I will be admitted to the hospital. The baby needs to make it to 23 weeks to even have a chance of survival outside, and the baby would be delivered at 32 weeks at the latest. We pray that God will allow this baby to be in the 10% that make it through this. For now, we take it one day, one hour at a time. I will update this blog at each development. I see the doctor again on Friday.
